Rattleback

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Rattleback from ebay. For those who don't know what it is, it is simply a plastic (in my case) semi-ellipsoidal body, which spun in one direction moves freely but when spun in the other direction there appears a resistance which spins back the body in the other direction (You have atached a link to a video I made, to see more clearly what I am talking about).

I am from the Northern Hemisphere and in my case if I move it clockwise It moves with no restriction other than friction of the air and the table on which is siting. If I move it anti-clockwise it encounters resistance (apparently other than friction of the air and the table on which is siting) and is pushes back to clockwise movement.

The reason I made this post is because I am looking for someone from the Southern Hemisphere (I am thinking here of Chris, if I am right you said once you are from Australia), to try this experiment and post the result with a video as I did. I can transfer money to the one who meets this criteria and whises to buy one. One piece is 0.74USD (shipping included worldwide), not that expensive I would say. If you are talking about asymmetry of the rattlebacks body, I think it has nothing to do with it. What has to do with and what I hope to see, (with Viduras help), is an exterior force acting upon the rattleback and stering it in the desired direction. But that remains to be seen. 

I would like more users to step in and accept this chalenge. For example you said about asymmetry, well... you could build one that is symmetrical and demonstrate thru experiment what you are stating. We would learn much more if we combine theory with experiment and I encourage everyone to do so, in a safe and rational manner of course.

It appears in has to do with assymetry. I was watching the video and I noticed his rattleback is exactly opposite to mine, meaning his high point is my low point and my low point is his high point, thats why it behaves opposite to mine. Hmm...

Hey Vasile,

Where in the world are you? Location?

Where in the World is this Guy in the Video? Location?

I believe that you will find there is a Magnetic Field Component to this. For example place a large slab Magnet under a Perspex plate, spin the rattleback, and one way will be preferable, flip the large Magnet over, so the opposite pole is up, the rattle back will have a preferable direction the opposite way.

Just a basic experiment in Magnetic Field Polarity.

If I am right, this will be related to the Coriolis Effect.

 

 

 

 

 

The Material of construction of the particular Rattleback, will build up a Static Charge, Spin it in the Magnetic Field, it will have very different rotational characteristics under different Magnetic Field Polarity's.

Doing the Experiment, will prove the Professor Right or Wrong!

Hey,

I am from Romania (Northern Hemishpere). The guy in the video is from Iowa, USA (Northern Hemisphere).

Well to know for sure, the same type of rattleback, has to be tested in different places. We wait for Viduras response and also for others who want to step in and do some related experiments.

Hello Vidura,

Thank you for keeping your word.

I know I said some post earlier that the behavier is due to asymetry but lately I was looking closer at it and I am not 100% sure it is just asymetry. So... the ultimate test is for me to send the rattleback ( that I have and with which I made the video posted), by mail to your location. I will check with my post office to see the price that I have to pay to for the rattleback to be send to Argentina and if the price is decent I will send it... of course if you are willing to receive it

P.S.: There is some sort of optic anomaly in a location near me. I will do some more test there to see if I get different results.
