Hi All, not sure this is the spot for this post so please let me know.  I'm looking to source the necesary equipment to start my replications and experiments at looking at scope options.  I see the Rigol DS1104Z in a few videos which is great, just wondering given I'm new to this space if there is a more suitable option? Also what specs are a must have. Thanks in advance

Hey Tinker, I guess the post was moved

My two cents here. I have a Siglent SDS 1104X-E. I'd put it on par with the Regol, pretty nice. Probably the same price range as the one you mentioned. Though the Regol, from what I can tell, seems less cluttered on the screen when showing measurements. Other than that, the only other advice I'd give is you can get away with 2 channels, but 4 is nicer if you can swing it. Also, my scope has 100 MHz bandwidth, which is also nice if you can swing it. But looking back now it's overkill, as most of these experiments are in the low KHz, some extending to mid range KHz I guess. So a 50 MHz would probably be just fine. And although probably standard in scopes these days, the basic math functions are very useful. For example, CH1(V) * CH2(A) will give you a instantaneous power measurement plotted on the screen. Then you can grab your mean or rms values from that.

I messed up and got a 2 channel first and found out quick that the others are needed. I would even spring for a 6 if they made it. You just have to be careful not to exceed the limits of input and what I call the phantom  grounds that  can bite you. I have both 2 and 4 and have used both concurrent .

Hello Tinker,

We believe, it should be your decision, when you decide to spend that sort of money on equipment. We all have made our own educated decisions on our own equipment, and of course, it cant be our decision, it must be yours.

We try not to advise anyone either way when it comes to spending this sort of money.

Please understand, it is up to you to do your own research here. We have stated this in many places here on this forum already!

Best Wishes,

   Chris

Thanks Chris, sound advice. I'm less concerned on a brand at this stage and more on what things are must haves. For example 50Mhz or 100Mhz, number of Channels etc...  To be honest part of me thinks the cheapest option that meets MVP is best just in case I cook the thing, not that I'm planning to but just in case.  Thanks again.

What is a Scalar:

In physics, scalars are physical quantities that are unaffected by changes to a vector space basis. Scalars are often accompanied by units of measurement, as in "10 cm". Examples of scalar quantities are mass, distance, charge, volume, time, speed, and the magnitude of physical vectors in general.

You need to forget the Non-Sense that some spout with out knowing the actual Definition of the word Scalar! Some people talk absolute Bull Sh*t!

The pressure P in the formula P = pgh, pgh is a scalar that tells you the amount of this squashing force per unit area in a fluid.

A Scalar, having both direction and magnitude, can be anything! The Magnetic Field, a Charge moving, yet some Numb Nuts think it means Magic Science!

The great Nikola Tesla:

Ere many generations pass, our machinery will be driven by a power obtainable at any point of the universe. This idea is not novel. Men have been led to it long ago by instinct or reason. It has been expressed in many ways, and in many places, in the history of old and new. We find it in the delightful myth of Antheus, who drives power from the earth; we find it among the subtle speculations of one of your splendid mathematicians, and in many hints and statements of thinkers of the present time. Throughout space there is energy. Is this energy static or kinetic? If static, our hopes are in vain; if kinetic - and this we know it is for certain - then it is a mere question of time when men will succeed in attaching their machinery to the very wheelwork of nature.
